Subscribing to the RSS Feed

RSS Info
I've gotten a few e-mails asking about the RSS feed subscriptions, so I thought I'd post a little more info on how to subscribe. In order to receive the RSS feeds, you need to have what's known as an RSS Reader. Several newer browsers have readers incorporated into them. These include Opera, Avant, Netscape 8.1, and Firefox.

Some are easier to use than others - Opera, for example, automatically pops open a box asking if you want to subscribe to the feed when you click on the RSS icon. Netscape and Avant are pretty easy to use as well: when you click the RSS icon, the feed will automatically open in a new browser window. With Netscape, you then add the page as a bookmark, give it a name and it will register itself as an RSS feed. With Avant, once the page is open you click Feeds > Add New Feed, and the address will automatically show up in the box that pops up. Click OK, then give the feed a name and you're done. If you're using these browsers, click this icon to subscribe Subscribe to RSS feed

In Firefox, RSS feeds are called "Live Bookmarks". I've added a feature to the address bar that will make it pretty painless for you to subscribe to the feeds. Here's how it works: look up at the address bar on this page. Do you see the icon that looks like the one in the last paragraph? Good - now click the icon in the address bar, and Firefox will open the "Add Live Bookmark" dialog box. Just follow the instructions from there and you're good to go.

There is another way to subscribe to and read RSS feeds - download a free, standalone RSS reader! Standalone readers are pretty cool, if you want to subscribe to several feeds. If you just want to keep up on one or two sites, it's almost better just to visit them directly. However, if you're into seeing what's new on several sites (news sites, blog's, TB.com...), they're worth investigating. Just Google "RSS readers" and see what you come up with. My favorite at the moment is actually the Google Reader. You can get it by setting up a free account here. Once you've set up your account, you simply add the URL of the feed and that's it. You can add our URL by right clicking on this icon TB.com RSS Feed, or by copying and pasting this address: http://www.timmbiery.com/rss.xml

If you have any suggestions as to how I can improve on these instructions, I'd like to hear from you. You can reach me via e-mail by clicking here.
